Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) combines the use of horses and a registered mental health professional (in our case Medicare and NDIS Registered Providers of psychological therapies). This unique modality enables clients to learn about themselves and others by participating in activities with the horse, and then processing or discussing feelings, behaviours and patterns. The horse is considered 'therapeutic' in itself, since horses are dynamic, sensitive and powerful living beings. There is also a healing bond that can develop between humans and horses. EAP uses this relationship with the horse to mirror client's experiences and facilitate change. Therapeutic results begin immediately (Dr Laura Trask, 2010).
Safety is a priority and no riding of the horse is involved.
There is a growing body of peer reviewed research supporting the use of EAP. It has been shown to help with depression, anxiety, stress, self esteem, behavioural disorders, anger management, conflict resolution, substance use, eating disorders, trauma, and people who are unresponsive to traditional therapies.
